Dr. Alan L. Keyes was appointed a resident scholar in foreign policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research in October 1987. His principle research at AEI centers on the preparation of two books, one on the relationship of diplomacy to strategic thinking and the other on self-government and international relations.
Active during the Reagan Administration, Keyes served as assistant secretary of state for international organization affairs and U.S. Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, a position in which he held the rank of ambassador and represented the United States at the United Nations General Assembly and at international meetings and conferences. Also, he served as deputy chairman of the U.S. delegation to the 1984 World Population Conference in Mexico City and as a member of the U.S. delegation to the 1985 Women’s Conference in Nairobi.
Prior to serving in the United Nations, Keyes was a consultant with the National Security Council and spent two years as a member of the State Department’s Policy Planning Staff, in addition to serving as a desk officer in the Department’s Office of South African Affairs and as vice-consul at the United States Consulate General in Bombay, India.
Before joining the U.S. Foreign Service in 1978, Keyes pursued graduate studies in government at Harvard University, receiving his Ph.D. in 1979. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and was a teaching fellow at the university from 1974 to 1978.
