Stephen J. Markman is assistant attorney general for legal policy with the Office of Legal Policy, which is the principal policy development office for the United States Department of Justice. It serves as the focus of the federal judicial selection recommendation of federal judicial candidates.
Prior to accepting his position with the Office of Legal Policy, Markman worked for seven years as Chief Counsel to the United States Subcommittee on the Constitution. During this time, he was involved with some of the most controversial and divisive debates within the U.S. Congress on constitutional and civil rights issues.
Markman also has served as Deputy Chief Counsel to the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary, and has worked as Legislative Assistant to the Ranking Member of the House Committee on the Judiciary.
He has authored numerous popular and scholarly articles on constitutional and civil rights for a number of publications, including Harper’s, The American Spectator and National Review.
