The American Founders meant to establish a constitutional order based on civil and religious liberty. They succeeded. But they also knew that to keep the Republic, children would have to be made into citizens, and politicians into statesman—not only to perpetuate the American cause—but to make sure the country continued its original devotion to the Constitution and the things for which we stand.
During the greatest crisis of the Republic, Abraham Lincoln understood this and helped save constitutional government by appealing to the Founders’ understanding, and thereby made the Union worthy of the saving.
I invite you to join Peter Schramm, Executive Director of the Ashbrook Center, as he speaks on "Constitutionalism Reconsidered: Lincoln’s Understanding of the American Founding."
